Walt Disney once said, “The first duty of the cartoon is not to picture or duplicate real action or things as they actually happen — but to picture on the screen things that have run thru the imagination of the audience…” The same could also be said for artists working within the Disney portfolio. As we see in Michelle St. Laurent’s The Shine of a Million Gems, Disney Fine Artists create wonderful works of art by interpreting moments in Disney history using their own artistic voice, and this, like Walt Disney and animation, allows the audience to witness a new perspective based on established imagery from the Disney canon. In this instance, Michelle St. Laurent depicts the famed “Diamond Mine” scene from Snow With and the Seven Dwarfs with a fresh perspective that allows the audiences mind to play within a newly minted take on a scene created nearly 80 years ago.
