The Shoshone elders had no idea where these images on the rocks and cliffs came from. Nothing on that subject had been passed down from their ancestors. In fact, one of their elders was quoted as saying that they sometimes find new petroglyphs in the spring when the snow melts. They think that the spirits carve their own images in the rocks. - FM
