A break in the ice has separated this seal hunter from his kayak which he left to commence his stalk. Perhaps his dog team is lost as well.
Fog and ocean currents make rescue unlikely. This was especially true in the days before the airplane. Thus the hunter comes to the “End of the Hunt,” stoically, but in complete resignation. - FM
