Stephen Lyman - High Creek Crossing
Gone are the days when their ancestors roamed the Great Plains undeterred by fence or hunter. Today, the bison (American buffalo) survive in isolated herds on private reserves and national parks.

Yet the buffalo do persevere despite their reduced numbers and lost habitat. In wooded mountain areas such as Yellowstone National Park, buffalo feed in winter by sweeping their massive heads through deep snow and pawing the ground for forage. In especially strong winter storms, they seek protection from wind and cold under nature's canopy of trees. After the storm's fury subsides, the herd moves on in search of new forage. - SL
