In the summer of 1991, I visited Baffin Island, west of Greenland in Canada s Northwest Territories. I traveled with Inuit guides to Cumberland Sound - an arm of the sea reaching in to the southeastern part of Baffin. Polar bears had recently been sighted there hunting walrus. The sky glowed pink and gold. We followed the shoreline, with its slabs of broken ice, in our boat, a Winnipeg Jet. Near the water, I noticed a large, flat tablet of ice which was cracked through the center. Was the crack made by the weight of a polar bear conducting its shore patrol on Cumberland Sound? - T. I.
