By the late 1930s, mechanical refrigeration had become commonplace, but many people, including my family, used the ice box throughout the 1940s. Even though the motor-driven ice truck had replaced the horse-drawn ice wagon long before I was born, the ice man remained the same: tough, strong and always willing to chip off pieces of ice for neighborhood kids on a hot summer day. I hop my image evokes feelings of serenity and peace. I wanted to capture these emotions in my world of art because they sometimes elude us in the world of reality. - JD
