Spring has arrived in the coastal town of Phillips Bay and so has the annual music festival—one of the most anticipated events of the year. While the audience gathers ‘round the gazebo to look and listen, three musicians warm up and the rest of the quartet—a violinist—practices her strings solo. (Perhaps she’s a bit nervous.) The longer light of day is still evident as the full moon rises, and the street lamps and walkway lights come on as a lovely overture to the symphony of spring.

Advantage Eagle

22.5" x 27.5" email price request

"'Advantage Eagle' is a term that will be heard frequently as long as the F-15 is flying," says artist Bill Phillips.  Phillips likes the Eagle's capabilities: mach 2.5 and an unrefueled range of 1300 to 1500 miles with the centerline tank in use.  In his painting, the artist shows the F-15 screaming over the Arizona desert on a training mission.  "To impart a feeling of power and motion, the landscape in my painting is at a slight angle and the foreground is blurred as the Eagle roars by at about 500 knots."

Alone No More

alone no more by william phillips paper 850 signed and numbered 14.25" x 36.5" email price request

Renowned aviation artist William Phillips loves the B-17. That much is clear every time he paints it, but he is especially fond of the B-17. It's Sweet Rose O'Grady in this dramatic horizontal skyscape.  "Rosie was a B-17G-5-VE, and she flew more missions than almost any other aircraft in the 8th Air Force," Phillips states. "She flew with 427th Squadron, 303rd Bomb Group, First Air Division, 41st Combat Bomb Wing, out of Molesworth, England."

More than 8,000 B-17G's were sent into European skies. Sweet Rose flew 124 missions, and Alone No More chronicles one of them. "She is returning from a mission with battle damage,' says Phillips. "She'd  dropped behind the formation and was alone in the vast European skies-one of the things most feared by bomber crews, because then they became easy prey for the fighters of the Third Reich. But now Rosie is joined by two Spitfire Mark XI's of the 241st Squadron. They will escort her home to England. Rosie and her crew are Alone No More."

America on the Move

america on the move by william phillips paper 1500 signed and numbered 24" x 30.25" $325
In June, 1968, the aircraft carrier America took up her position in dangerous waters.Seen here launching an F-4, while an A-4 prepares to launch, the U.S.S. America begins her tour of duty off the coast of Vietnam. On her deck are an A-3 Skywarrior (in front of the island) and two RA-5's. A cruiser and a destroyer stand in the background. Above four A-4's fly in formation while an HC-7 Seasprite helicopter transits between the cruiser and the America.

Among the Columns of Thor

among the columns of thor paper 1000 signed and numbered 24" x 33" $295

Countersigned by Donald J. Strait, commander, 361st Fighter Squadron; Clinton DeWitt Burdick, pilot, 361st Fighter Squadron; K.O. Dessert, commander, 409th Bomb Squadron; Edwin C. Baker, pilot, 409th Bomb Squadron

"Among the Columns of Thor has double meaning to it," says renowned aviation artist William Phillips. "In Norse mythology, Thor is the god of thunder and war. These B-24s from the 409th Bomb Squadron, 23rd Bomb Group, are in column formation, literally flying among Thor's cloud columns. They are escorted by P-51s from the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, as they return from their targets in Germany."

Phillips depicts the aircraft flying from the deeper, brooding colors that are symbolic of war into the lighter skies of safety and peace. The uncamouflaged silver color scheme of the planes represents Allied superiority and the coming end of the war.

This piece is countersigned by Donald J Strait, commander, and Clinton DeWitt Burdick, pilot, 361st Fighter Squadron: and K.O. Dessert, commander, and Edwin C. Baker, pilot, 409th Bomb Squadron.

And Now the Trap

and now the trap by william phillips paper 850 signed and numbered 23.5" x 33 " email price request
It is 1945 in the Pacific. Three F6F Hellcats are shown returning to the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-12) after a routine patrol. The majority of the patrol flight was over, as was the majority of the war, but for these Hellcat pilots and the Allied military, there were still some very important things to do. "For these planes," says renowned aviation artist William Phillips, "it was a trap'--landing on the relatively small, moving deck and catching the arresting cable with the plane's tail hook. For the military as a whole, it was winning the war."

And the Light Shall Prevail

And the Light Shall Prevail by William Phillips paper 950 signed and numbered 18" x 27" $195
"My wife Kristi and I have enjoyed several trips to the coastline along Oregon and California and one day we witnessed a storm that inspired this image. The morning dawned gray with a strong wind, the sea as fierce as I’ve ever seen it, the waves crashing against the shore and throwing their spray skyward. We watched as afternoon waned and stood in awe as the sun broke through, bringing life to sea and sky. I thought of Psalm 27:1, ‘The Lord, is, my light and my salvation...’ for He, like a lighthouse, beckons us from the storms of life into the shelter of His love."

Apple Creek Yacht Club by William Phillips paper 550 signed and numbered 20" x 25" $175
artist-enhanced canvas 200 signed and numbered 24" x 30" $795
It is summer. Along Apple Creek, 30 minutes west of Phillips Bay, the sounds of meadowlarks and bull frogs mingle with the aroma of flowers and freshly-cut grass. One can sit on the lawn at the Apple Creek Inn for a picnic in the sun’s glow, or enjoy the creek itself with its clear spring water, swimming hole and slow current. The boys and their dog have gathered at the old stone footbridge. Tying their boats to string with a metal fishing sinker as a counterweight, they set their imaginations afloat, and build a rich treasury of memories as members of the Apple Creek Yacht Club.

The Beginning of the End

23" x 27" email price request
The flight of the Enola Gay and the capture of Iwo Jima, were two of the most significant events of World War II. I wanted, in some small way, to pay tribute to those who captured the island fortress even as I paid homage to the United States Army Air Forces and the crew of the Enola Gay for the mission. Both events hastened the end of the war and made the invasion of the Japanese homeland unnecessary. - William Phillips

As the firework displays light up the night sky with a dazzling palette of color, we know it’s time to celebrate summer at the Bay View Inn. The 150-year-old lodge features one of the most picturesque views in the Phillips Bay Highlands. The Inn is as renowned for the sumptuous meals served on a stone terrace overlooking both the inner and outer bays as it is for its nightly displays of patriotism during the month of July. This night, classic automobiles are featured at the twilight cruise from dockside through Phillips Bay culminating with dancing to live music from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. If you’re lucky enough to find a spot on the west garden lawn across from the heart-shaped pond, you’ve got “The best seat in the house.”

Cape Neddick Dawn

cape neddick dawn by william phillips paper 950
signed and numbered
33" x 18.5" $195
In Cape Neddick Dawn, William Phillips beautifully captures that sense of serenity that enfolds us when we view a sunrise by the sea.  Quietly, the cold, restless waves grow still... the schooner's white sails shift to pale gold.  Here, no footprints mar the freshly fallen snow ashore for the lightkeeper has not yet had a visitor this morning.  But he is clearly expecting you - his home on the hill beckons with a warm, comforting glow and a bright light shines in the boathouse... We think you'll agree that Cape Neddick Dawn makes a perfect bookend to Bill's memorable portrait of a lighthouse bathed in a late-day sunshine, The Lightkeeper's Gift, which sold out readily last year.

"This limited edition print honors James B. Stockdale, who led the first American air attacks against North Vietnam in 1964, and whose fighter squadron 51 flew Combat Air Patrols (CAP's) above the USS Ticonderoga.  But on September 9, 1965, Stockdale was shot down, and from that day on until February 12, 1973, he was the senior naval officer in North Vietnam's Prisoner of War camps - leading an organized resistance by all POW's against enemy interrogation and torture.  For his "intrepidity at the risk of his own life above and beyond the call of duty," James B. Stockdale was presented with the nation's highest decoration for gallantry, the Medal of Honor." - William Phillips

Changing of the Guard

Changing of the Guard by William Phillips paper 500

William Phillips' portrayal of Army helicopters against a backdrop of Heidelberg Castle is as much symbolic as literal.  His work depicts a fly-by of a UH-1H "Huey" and a UH-60 "Blackhawk." Yet the real story is told by the artist in these words: "The Army's newest helicopter, the 'Blackhawk,' begins a turn toward the viewer and into the action of future events.  In the background, the 'Huey" flies a steady course into the pages of history."

Channel Dawn

Channel Dawn by William Phillips giclee canvas 125 signed and numbered 9" x 12" $225
The Supermarine Spitfire was a single-seat fighter used by the British and many other Allied Countries during World War II. Easily identified by its distinctive elliptical wings, the Spitfire grew to legendary status during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire performed so well during the battle and was so beloved by pilots that, unlike other models, it remained in production through the end of the war.

Chasing the Daylight

20" x 36.5" email price request

William Phillips is well known for capturing the speed and exhilaration of aircraft in flight. He now transfers that skill to another popular conveyance - the train - without leaving aviation behind. Chasing the Daylight portrays the best of both worlds with Phillips unique sense of romance and excitement.

The Southern Pacific's GS-4 4-8-4, number 4449, is the only Daylight type locomotive still operating. It was restored in1976 and used to pull the Bicentennial Freedom Train. In 1984 it was repainted in the familiar Southern Pacific color scheme - orange, red, black, white and silver - which is how Phillips best remembers it.

"I enjoy trains and ride them every chance I get," he says. "On one such trip, while enjoying the late afternoon colors and the vast plains which rolled outside the window, I noticed a small speck in the sky. As I watched, it grew larger and turned in our direction. To my sheer delight, it turned out to be an N2S-2 Stearman-a biplane produced for the Naval Air Training Command. The image was so impressive that I promised myself I would capture it on canvas one day."

As the fourth in the "Inns of Christmas" series, William S. Phillips captures the spirit of the season, as well as a glimpse of Santa, with Christmas Eve at the Ahwahnee. Christmas magic has created collector magic, making Sold Out editions of Christmas Eve Delivery, Christmas Eve at the Winchester Inn and Winter Visitors at Kringle Hill Inn.

Imagine Santa's joy while flying over our national treasure of Yosemite National Park and arriving at the majestic Ahwahnee Hotel. This National Historical Landmark represents the great American outdoors and is known for its granite façade, striking beamed ceilings, massive stone hearths and richly colored Native American artwork. Although beautiful and elegant in any season, the Ahwahnee is especially stunning in winter. Each December, the Ahwahnee hosts The Bracebridge Dinner, a feast of food, song and mirth. The holiday season, with its great pageantry and a sumptuous feast fit for a king, is an event even Santa wouldn't miss.

Christmas on the Eighth

Christmas on the Eighth by William Phillips canvas 300

To the dedicated golfer, a day without golf is hardly a day at all. Imagining Christmas for these enthusiasts, Bill Phillips created Christmas on the Eighth, a charming holiday tribute to those most loyal of hobbyists. “I expect that if they were really into it they would have gone out, cleared the snow off the greens and played a round of golf,” said the artist. At the end of the eighth hole, though, it’s nice to have a warm, cheery house to which to return.

Clipper at the Gate

Clipper at the Gate captures a rare moment from 1939 aviation history: the amazing California Clipper in the late afternoon sunlight above the spectacular San Francisco countryside and the newly opened Golden Gate Bridge.  "The 314 Clipper was one of Boeing's famous and luxurious Flying Boats," says Phillips "and it represents the finest aspects in the romance of flight.  I wanted to preserve this exciting chapter in aviation history and recognize the pioneer spirit of Pan American Airways."

Confrontation at Beachy Head

phillips - confrontation at beachy head paper 1000 signed and numbered 17.5" x 23.5" email price request

On August 6, 1940, Germany mounted a massive air attack on Great Britain. The Germans reasoned that if they could control the sky over England, the country would soon fall - as Poland, Austria and France had already fallen.  What they had not anticipated was the fierceness with which the English took to the skies to do battle. Many young English pilots would die preserving the freedom of their country. But by September 15, 1940, their sacrifices would prove not to have been in vain; the English and their allies had repulsed the German takeover.  Of Confrontation At Beachy Head Aviation artist William Phillips says, "Shrieking over the cliffs of Beachy Head, a Spitfire of No. 92 Squadron and a German BF109E of 9/JG54 engage in a head-on confrontation during the first week of September 1940. This highly contested piece of real estate was to see many similar confrontations during the crucial days between August 6 and September 15, 1940. Who was to obtain the advantage in this confrontation of grim skill?  You be the judge."

Bill had some fun with the title of this image, a pun on "court" and "yard."  The soft spring evening naturally inclines the young couple's thoughts to love, but look at one of the second story windows - you'll find someone keeping a sharp eye on the proceedings!  Phillips fills the scene with many nostalgic touches, including the Volkswagen Beetle and 1958 Chevrolet Impala convertible parked in the driveway.

Dauntless Against a Rising Sun

phillips - dauntless against a rising sun paper 850

"The title of this painting was a natural," says William Phillips, who incorporates the thrill of flying into every airborne image, "as it captures the spirit of the U.S. forces in those dark days after the initial Japanese victories in the Pacific."

But after the darkness comes the dawn, and Phillips captures the swell of hope and courage consummately as the planes soar above the broiling sea of clouds - truly Dauntless Against a Rising Sun.

"It's everything I like doing with symbolic aviation art," Phillips continues.  "Two SBD-3s of VS-5, flying from the Yorktown, are set against the dark clouds of war and a rising sun - the symbol of the Japanese empire.  Only in this case, the sun is symbolic of hope, and the dawn of a new era for the Allies, as the tide turns in the Pacific at the Battle of Midway."

William Phillips revisits the Dauntless, the standard ship-bourne dive-bomber of the U.S. Navy for most of World War II.  In this unique-format canvas three SBD 5's form up, enroute to a target on a morning mission early in 1944.  One of the last squadrons to operate the SBD was VB-10 and it flew from the carrier USS Enterprise CV-6, the most decorated ship of the Second World War.

Dawn of the Liberators

Dawn of the Liberators by William Phillips canvas 125
signed and numbered
9" x 12" $235

Created as a tribute to the aviators whose bravery contributed to the Allied victory in World War II, this image was commissioned as a memorial to artist Howard Terpning’s brother, First Lieutenant John E. Terpning, who paid the ultimate price to secure American freedom. First Lieutenant Terpning was a pilot in the crew of B-24D Bomber 42-20525, which was lost over New Guinea on May 7, 1944.

As they fly into formation on the way to their targets, two B-24s of the 43rd Bomb Group’s 64th Squadron climb into a Pacific dawn. Eclipsed in number by their European counterparts, the B-24 Squadrons of the Asiatic-Pacific theater fought a relentless and determined enemy in an unforgiving environment.

Countersigned by Paul Tibbets, command pilot, "Enola Gay"; Thomas W. Ferebee, bombardier; Theodore J. Van Kirk, navigator; George R. Caron, tail gunner; and Richard H. Nelson, radio operator.

After fifty years, the men who brought the dawn have been reunited to commemorate the events of August 6 and August 9, 1945 - two days that profoundly altered the course of history in the first century of powered flight. This limited edition print commemorates the flight of the Enola Gay and is countersigned by crew members: Paul Tibbets, command pilot; Thomas W. Ferebee, bombardier; Theodore J. Van Kirk, navigator; George R. Caron, tail gunner; and Richard H. Nelson, radio operator.

Through the memories of the men who were there, the stories behind the atomic flights of Enola Gay and Bock's Car have been uniquely documented in limited edition fine art prints and documentary film. Bock's Car, done by Craig Kodera as an accompanying piece, makes it a perfect suite.

"Christmas with snow and hot apple cider...," says Bill, "I think that the cold outside accentuates the welcoming warmth inside."  Although he grew up in California, he always dreamed of white Christmases, and with this newest work he included a sense of peace and happiness after the long years of World War II. - William S. Denali Summer

Denali Summer by William Phillips canvas 150

22" x 30" $725
Denali Summer features two celebrated icons of the far North: one natural, one man-made. The forbidding and beautiful Alaskan wilds provide the backdrop for the legendary workhorse of the Alaskan bush: a De Havilland Beaver float plane. As the plane roars over the summer tundra, the icy river below rushes and tumbles its contents of glacial silt. On the distant horizon, America's highest peak dominates the horizon. (Mount McKinley is also known as Denali, or "The High One," in the language of the local people.) Mount McKinley's scale is so massive that the mountain actually creates its own weather, and today its peak sparkles in the brilliant sunlight of one of the few cloudless days of the year. - W. S. With plexi-glass fragments from his helicopter's windshield buried in his hand, calf and thigh, Michael J. Novosel, pilot for the 82nd Medical Detachment steadied the 'copter' as another soldier pulled a wounded soldier to safety. Met by intense ground-fire, Novosel still managed to save 29 soldiers by going back into enemy fire again and again.  For this, he was an Army Medal of Honor recipient in the Vietnam War.

This print is a fine tribute to Army aviators, their crews and the gunships that protected them. It is countersigned by both Novosel and his son Mike, Jr. They were the only father and son team to fly in the same unit - and each had the task of rescuing each other and flying more than 8,800 wounded to safety or emergency medical treatment.
