STEPHEN
LYMAN - LIMITED EDITIONS - I-Q
Special note: Stephen Lyman died tragically on April 16, 1996 in a hiking
accident in the place he loved most outside of his own
home: Yosemite National Park. His love of the world and
his ability to communicate it to us through his paintings
and photographs will inspire us for the rest of our lives.
WORKS SHOWN IN YELLOW FIELDS WERE SIGNED BY STEPHEN LYMAN,
HIMSELF.
Other works were signed by his widow, Andrea Lyman. |

Steve loved the Alaskan landscape. He would return home from camping trips to Denali National Park reinvigorated, impressed and inspired by the area's vastness and beauty. Caribou, he felt, exemplified an animal that could survive only in an area untouched by humans. |

One of the most intelligent, loving, social creatures on Earth, the wolf occupies an integral, necessary place in the ecosystem. Man's dislike of wolves has ancient roots, mostly due to its vying with man in the pursuit of big game. His haunting howls at night, aggressive predatory behavior in packs, ghostly presence and piercing eyes all contribute to the publics fear of and prejudice against the "big bad wolf." Along with so many other wild animals, man has killed, trapped and chased the wolf until they can only be found in the remote wilderness. In the twilight glow of evening, a pack of wolves picks up the scent of an intruder to their territory. Is it a grizzly? A mountain lion? A lone wolf? The wolves have left their scent to mark the pack's territory, usually hundreds of square miles in area. This serves as a warning to any intruders that they are trespassing. In this painting, the pack has paused briefly to communicate to other pack members, through howling, the whereabouts of the stranger before bounding over the icy creek to pursue the intruder. - S. The ancient Ahwahneechee name for this lake is Pyweak (Pie-wee-ack), which means Lake of the Shining Rocks. I would categorize this painting with my wilderness light images. This is not a campfire or a candle, but it is the illumination and drama of natural light in the wilderness. I really enjoy painting light, trees, rocks, water and reflections. I love those elements and I love walking over the rock in Yosemite. This is a scene that just invites you to step onto that slope, even though it's not level. It's asking you to keep your balance and open your senses as fully as you can. Walking over that rock puts you fully in touch with nature... with all of life really. As I said in my Firelight Chapbook, when I walk over the rock, my mind becomes keen and aware. My body seems to be in rhythm with the Earth. There's a wonderful connection there. If you look at the trees in the foreground, you'll notice that each one is different. Each one has its own personality. They are really wonderful trees. I refer to them as tree people. They're all so fascinating in their individual characters, and that's what I'm trying to convey. - S. L. |

Idaho’s Lake Pend Oreille has been admired for centuries, first by the Native Americans who drank from its still, clean water, then by the white men who came to hunt at its shores. “I like wildlife to play an incidental role in my landscapes,” said Stephen Lyman. “The flying Canada geese, deer and crescent moon may not be evident on the first glance of this spectacular winter sunset. I try to suggest something that underlies the visible landscape, just as the ripples of the waves." |

Images like this helped establish Lyman's incredible popularity in the world of limited editions. Here, wildlife and wilderness are sewn into a seamless landscape, the bighorn sheep blending almost imperceptibly among the rocks and grasses in the background. |

The bear was one of Lyman's most-memorable and rarely-painted animals. The native Miwok word for the grizzly bear is the source of the name "yosemite," which was the artist's favorite place on earth. The quiet serenity of this scene stands as a reminder of our fellowship with both the natural and animal world -- goals which honor the memory and the legacy of the artist. |

A campfire is always so attractive, no matter how far away you are from it. In this image, the fire is immediate and hot, while the moon is cool and gentle. The story behind Moonfire is one of balance. - S. L. |

My reason for doing this was to continue the fun, magic and good feelings of the subject and to place it in the context of a fantastic and thrilling ride over an exquisite beautiful moonlit winter landscape. This is not a ride you can take at Disneyland. This is a ride you can take only through your imagination. This isn't Santa Claus. This is St. Nicholas on whom the Santa Claus character is based. And when it comes down to it, this is my vision of what this wonderful, magical character could be, and how he does all the things he does. St. Nicholas doesn't leave toys, per se; he leaves good things - good feelings, good energy. That's what the toys represent. It's not the materialism that is important; it's the good feelings and the joy that we are truly after. - S. L. |

For three years, I wanted to make a campfire the unique focus of a painting. As a regular visitor to Yosemite National Park and an admirer of the writings of naturalist John Muir, I have a special appreciation for the wilderness. A photo cannot possibly reveal a fire's extremes of bright and dark. Every value of light and shade must be precise; only a paintbrush can convey it. And how could a photograph express the mesmerizing pattern into the air, the energy of decades of sunshine dispersing in a matter of minutes? It took years of planning and months of preliminary work, but finally the painting was completed. After creating "A Mountain Campfire", I happened upon a quote by John Muir about a night spent in the wilderness. It was as if Muir had seen the painting himself. Muir said, "The glories of a mountain campfire are far greater than may be guessed. One can make a day of any size and regulate the rising and setting of his own sun and the brightness of its shining. You gaze around at the illuminated trees as if you'd never seen trees before. Sparks stream off like comets or in round, star-like whirls from a sun. They fly into space like Milky Ways of lavishness and fall like white flakes, feathery and pure as snow." - S. L. |

Stephen Lyman was an explorer who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature. Through his art, you can travel into a wilderness very few have experienced and share the sensation of being in the true outdoors - discovering, studying and enjoying the all-encompassing beauty of unspoiled wilderness.
In the early morning mist of Noisy Neighbor, a solitary grizzly emerges from the forest, ambling through the bear grass along the lakeside. The glassine water underscores the serenity of the moment. Suddenly the silence is broken by the screech of a Stellar Jay, upset by the appearance of an intruder into his neck of the woods. Knowing it would be fruitless to go after the bird, the powerful bear just stands watching, while the jay, knowing he has plenty of distance from the intruder, boldly continues to chastise him. |

This dramatically formatted print is quintessential Steve Lyman. Through the eyes of an adventurer and artist, he takes us to a place we seldom, if ever, would have the chance to see ourselves. He gives us a most spectacular view at its most vivid and magnetic time of day. He presents us with an environment as a whole, each element (animal, earth, sky and light) only compounding the allure of the last. As an artist, he frames the scene to accent its striking nature. |
