Make Believe |

"Make believe" was a part of growing up for all of us and, in a way, is still a part of my adult life. I find that creating a work of art is a little like making believe for me. When researching my paintings, I make many visits to antique shops, and I am reminded of my own past and imagine what it might have been like in earlier days. The baby buggy in this painting is from the past; it continues to be cherished by a child making believe, just as it was by her mother and grandmother before her. - J.D. |

A wooden boat, a toy truck and a mud puddle are all these children need; their imaginations supply the rest. Imagination is a wonderful gift. With it dreams come true, and we can do or be anything we want. - J.D. |

My Best Friends |

My wife, Carole, loves her stuffed animals; she treats them as if they had a life of their own. When Caroles birthday came this year, I wanted to give her something of myself. I often think about all the paintings I sign my name to and how they are really done by both of us. Her help, suggestions, advice and honest criticism are as important as any brushstroke that I put on canvas. I noticed these two little friends of hers; they seemed to be alive, with feelings for each other. I painted this little painting for Carole. Her best friends are my best friends because they remind me of her, and I will love her always. - J.D. |

A New Beginning |

Every country has symbols that represent its beliefs and way of life. In our country, one of our symbols is the Statue of Liberty. For the immigrants who immigrated to America, it was a symbol of a new beginning and an opportunity to be part of the American dream. I wanted to portray a sense of those feelings a new arrival to this land may have had when looking at the Statue of Liberty from Ellis Island, at a moment when all their emotions were at a peak, with thoughts of what lay ahead a new life, a new beginning. - J.D. |

The New Citizen |
 |
paper |
5000
signed and numbered |
11.5" x 8.5" |
$155 |
This painting takes place around the turn of the century. A new citizen is about to be born the first of this family to be born in the new country. I wanted the expression on the girls face to show excitement and anticipation as she feels the baby move. When a new baby is born, its a wonderful thing, but for an immigrant family, it must have been especially wonderful. - J.D. |

Sometimes I think the memories of youth are better than it really was. As I conceived this painting, a flood of memories came back of the times my brother and I spent together. I tried to hold this nostalgic feeling as I worked on the painting. We were always playing in some back alley or vacant lot behind some old barn or building. We would flip coins to decide just about anything from figuring out what we would do that day to who would be the team captain. All major and minor decisions were decided with a flip. If there were only two of us, it would be heads or tails; if there were more than two, it would be odd man out. - J.D. |

Anyone who has tried ice-skating remembers those first perilous moments on the ice, when your ankles collapse, and your rear end spends more time on the ice than your skates. Trying something new can be uncertain and scary in the beginning, but with determination and practice the reward is usually a lot of fun and joy. It is those first perilous moments on the ice, which we all must face sometime, that I wanted to portray in On Thin Ice. - J.D. |

Most immigrants who passed through Ellis Island came with a burning desire to succeed. This painting is a tribute to all of them. They arrived in the baggage room and were escorted to the Great Hall. They were questioned and inspected for disease before finding out if they would receive tickets to their destination or be sent back to their country of origin. - J.D. |

While waiting to be processed through the Great Hall at Ellis Island, this immigrant man passes the time with his children by playing cats cradle with them. Kids all over the world, past and present, are all alike. It doesnt take long for monotony and boredom to set in. Isnt it great what a father can do with a simple piece of string. - J.D. |

The child in my painting, Playmates, is living in a wonderful time in her life. With her friends, she is experiencing the joy of being content with who she is and what she has. It is a time of pretend and make believe, a time of innocence. There is a certain wisdom that small children have-if only we could hold onto the wisdom and innocence of childhood. - J.D. |

There is no way for me to express in words the pleasure I received from listening to old radio programs. Only in my paintings can I attempt to share these emotions. What a joy it was to let my imagination run free. In my mind, I created what those wonderful heroes looked liked. They were magnificent. No movie or television program, or even real life, could have equaled what my imagination could conjure up, and, amazingly, in my mind all those heroes looked a bit like me. I look back on my early school days with fond memories now, but, at the time, I didnt like school. My mind would wander, and I spent most of my time daydreaming and drawing pictures. The days in school seemed long, and I wanted them to be over so I could escape into my world of make-believe and pretend. Everyone needs time alone. Wonderful thoughts come only from within; maybe daydreams are a way for them to surface. Everyone needs these moments, even worldly scholars like the boy in my painting. - J.D. |

I see her look at me from across the room, and when I catch her eyes, they turn and look away. I look at her every chance I get, and when she looks back at me, I turn my eyes and look away. Skipping Rope |

Since I did not have a sister and my own children are sons, I am always asking my wife, Carole, to tell me what she did in her youth. Carole loved to skip rope. She tells me how the sound of the rope was almost hypnotic as it hit the ground. My friends and I wouldn't have been caught dead jumping rope. Somehow that was something 'only girls did.' But I must confess. There were times, when nobody else was around and I had a length of rope, I too, would succumb to the hypnotic lure of that sound. As my feet left the ground I would find myself counting, 'One, two, three....' until I would trip up, look hastily around and hope that no one saw me. - J.D. |

All of us who loved and played baseball knew Slugger we all wished we were Slugger. Most of us felt the crack of the bat as we got a hit, but few of us watched the ball sail over the fence for a home run. We all dreamed about it, though. I think dreaming about what it would be like was enough sometimes. Dreams are what baseball is all about and why it is so special to so many. - J.D. |

The idea of Spring Fever came to me as I caught a glimpse of my youngest son doing his homework. The day outside was a glittering spring day, and as my son gazed out the window instead of at the work in front of him, a flood of memories flashed through me. I remembered my school days and the times when I was caught by the feelings of not wanting to be in school or doing schoolwork. - J.D. |

This is a painting of a father enjoying his family on a Sunday afternoon. Hes been reading the paper and having a cup of coffee, and hes just paused to look over at his wife and daughter enjoying themselves in the old porch swing
A moment in time that passes and is too often forgotten. To see the smile on the face of someone you love...To hear the sound of their happiness...To breathe in the sweet, fresh air and smell life...What did we ever do to deserve something so precious? - J.D. |

In larger cities, newspaper boys often claimed prime corner locations as their territory. Once a corner was staked out, diligent efforts were made to maintain the rights to this territory. In Territorial Rights, a smaller newsboy' territory has been challenged by a larger newsboy and his friend. I wanted to capture the moment before the smaller boy is forced to make his decision either to fight for or retreat from his territory. The viewer will never know what decision is made. - J.D. |

While taking a break from posing my models, the little girl, June, went to her mother to have a thorn removed from her hand. Her brother, Julian, sat next to his mother with an expression that captivated me. His face reflected all of the pain and discomfort that this sister must have felt. I knew that I wanted to capture that moment in a painting, and I painted it just as I saw it. I never tire of watching children experience life. Everything is a new discovery, a small adventure. - J.D. |

It is a cold, rainy Saturday, and the children are confined indoors. Today there will be no baseball games in the street, no marble tournaments in the backyard, no excursions in the woods to look for buried treasure. I thought of such a day when I conceived Tie Breaker. The boredom of being cooped up inside can sometimes be made easier to bear with a game. The children in Tie Breaker are engaged in a marathon of checkers, each child chalking up wins. You can almost hear the clock ticking away the day as the dog yawns, wishing he were playing fetch, and the boy ponders his next move, hoping he will win this Tie Breaker game. - J.D. |

There was a time when we ran and played in the hot summer days. The sweat would flow, and the thirst would be overwhelming. There seemed to be no end to our energy. How good it felt to take time out to pick up the hose and drink and drink in that good, cold water. - J.D. |

Railroad tracks have always given me a strange feeling of faraway places, of something just around the bend, a feeling that if I followed the tracks far enough, I would discover something out there waiting for me. Balancing myself on the tracks, watching the trains go by and listening to the wonderful sound of the train whistle were all part of my youth. I enjoyed these feelings and memories the entire time I painted Walking the Rails. - J.D. |

At the first hint of warmth in the spring air, the vacant lots would beckon to us. Images of all the great pitchers would fill our heads. Winding up and letting go of the ball - so worn and used that it was held together with electricians tape - we would dream of someday standing before enormous crowds in baseball stadiums somewhere. Not all of us make it to the big leagues, but those of us who played, even in vacant lots, always have the game in our hearts. -J.D. |

He stands alone in the outfield unnoticed by fans. Suddenly the ball is hit, and hes the center of attention. All eyes are on him, and its his moment. He goes into action. Arm upraised, legs pumping as he races for the ball, the sun shining in his eyes. Everyone holds his breath as the ball starts its downward arc. He leaps into the air as the ball smacks into the glove, stinging the palm of his hand. The pain is never felt as the cheers rise for the "Winning Catch." - J.D. |

When I was a boy, everyone shot marbles. It was a "big deal." My brother, Clayne, and I were pretty good shooters, but we lived right across a small highway from the best marble shooter anywhere, "Butch" Adams. The three of us were best friends, but when it came to marbles, Butch was merciless. He gave no quarter, ever. My brother and I thought we were just bad marble shooters until, one day, a trip to the other side of town with our parents taught us differently. To our surprise, we wiped out everyone around. For me, the lesson to be learned from this experience was that we should not try to compare ourselves with the genius of others. If we learn to accept the genius that is in each of us and do the best we can, then maybe we too can be the best marble shooters around - at least on the other side of town. - J.D. |
