Ready for Flight - Peregrine Falcon |
 |
paper |
950 signed and numbered |
13.5" x 25" |
$860 |
|
The most exciting raptor in the world is possibly the peregrine falcon. It is one of the fastest creatures on the planet. Its speed in a dive has been estimated at between 150 and 200 miles per hour. The peregrine is built for the chase in an elongated teardrop shape - the ultimate in streamlining. - R. B. |

Ready for the Hunt - Snowy Owl |
 |
paper |
950 signed and numbered |
20" x 31.5" |
$1015 |
|
The owl I have shown is perched on an old cedar post. I enjoy the way the elements on the installations were placed by our forefathers. On some long forgotten day, a farmer placed that post. The reason is no longer evident, but for the owl it doesn't matter. The post is a perfect place from which to begin his hunt. - R. B. |

Reclining Ocelot |

950 signed and numbered |
11" x 22.5" |

The ocelot is perhaps the most elegant of the small cats. The ocelot in this print is relaxed and watchful. The painting is in the soft mood of a shade, tropical siesta. - R. B. |

This fox is on the prowl. He is about to check under the pine tree where the snow is thinner and where some of his prey might be finding shelter. Just before he pushes through the tangle of twigs and grasses, he pauses for a moment and notices some rabbit tracks. - R. B. |

Red Squirrel |

|
Red squirrels, or their close cousins, are found all over the Northern Hemisphere, wherever there are coniferous trees. They are very active, scampering, jumping and climbing throughout the day. They seem to be either moving full tilt or in a "freeze alert" position. This is the pose I have chosen for this painting. - R. B. |

Red-Tailed Hawk by the Cliff |
 |
paper |
950 signed and numbered |
20" x 29.5" |
$900 |
|
I am honored to have a resident red-tail that has selected a big oak tree outside my studio window as his perch. When someone comes out the door, he gives a single, shrill keeer-r-r and calmly takes wing, soaring down into the valley. It never ceases to thrill me to look at a flying bird of prey. - R. B. |

Red-Tailed Hawk Study |

Realistic painting is an attempt at illusion. Depth, form, space and air must be portrayed on a two-dimensional surface. The slightest change of angle creates a different apparent flat shape. In my painting, I want to convey an understanding of all of the planes in depth by manipulating the shapes and their tones. No picture such as a drawing or photograph is really adequate for reference. Therefore, I often use these pictures to create three-dimensional reference or sculpture. This not only gives me a better understanding but also allows me to see what happens in varying light conditions. I have been doing these sculptures in clay or Plasticine for many years. After I am finished using them for a given painting, the sculptures tend to be neglected and damaged or destroyed. Many people have suggested that I put my sculptures in more permanent form such as bronze so that others could see and enjoy them. The red-tailed hawk portrait shows the qualities of that particular species. He is alert and handsome but with a certain mildness in his generally fierce bird of prey look. The flat planes and concave and convex surfaces are exaggerated to help me express them more clearly in the painting. - R. B. |

Red-Winged Blackbird and Rail Fence |
 |
paper |
950 signed and numbered |
18.25" x 25" |

|
The bold, slashing strokes of the rail fence and its reflection attracted me because of the abstract form. It made me think of a Franz Kline painting or a piece of Japanese calligraphy. The effect of the strokes suggested a Samurai conflict which seemed appropriate for these red-winged warriors. - R. B. |

Red Wolf |

paper |
950 signed and numbered |

|
In this century, many species have become extinct. One of the last major species to disappear in the wild in North America is the red wolf. I have shown this one in the morning light, moving through the rank lowland grass and willow thicket. This was its typical habitat when last seen in the wild. - R. B. |

I find that I am constantly surprised by what I see everyday. The natural world is dynamic and almost never identical visually. My surprises are usually modest and on a small and gentle scale. One such small and surprising delight, this particular clump of reeds, was a glorious thing to me. - R. B. |

Resting Place - Cape Buffalo |
 |
paper |
950 signed and numbered |
19.5" x 33.5" |
$155 |
|
The cape buffalo is a powerful and dangerous African mammal. Often mistaken for the slovenly domestic water buffalo, the cape buffalo is more like a tough, Spanish fighting bull. Here I have shown a mature bull in repose. Something has startled him and his ever-present cattle egret companions - perhaps an approaching elephant or lion. - R. B. |

Robins at the Nest |
 |
paper |
950 signed and numbered |
11.25" x 14.75" |
$245 |
|
The American robin is one of the most widespread birds in North America. I have seen them in the South and at the arctic tree line, but most people think of them as "right around home" birds. In fact, they have adapted so well to human settlement that they are probably more abundant around towns, villages and farms than they are in the wilderness. - R. B. |

It was a feeling of power and dignity that I wanted to capture in this painting. The rhythmic flow of ancient rocks, with their intricate, weathered surfaces, the dark, mysterious forest and the confident, impressive animal all form a unity that sums up what is best in our natural world. - R. B. |

Rolling Waves - Lesser Scaup
1989 New York Duck Stamp Print |
 |
paper |
signed and numbered |
6.5" x 9" |
$185 |
|
Some of my earliest memories of bird watching, about which I became serious from the age of 12, were of winter hikes along Lake Ontario looking at rafts of winter ducks. These rafts would float in undulating patches, disappearing and reappearing as the movement of the water changed. It was many years before I saw the scaups in their breeding grounds in the far north and thought of them as individuals or pairs; I had always thought of them as flocks. - R. B. |

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak |
 |
lithograph |
290 signed and numbered |
10" x 8" |
$445 |
One of the most welcome sounds of spring and summer is the cheerful warble of the rose-breasted grosbeak. When I lived in Ontario, I led naturalist hikes through the burgeoning life of a hardwood forest in May. The carpet of spring flowers on the forest floor would be fading, and the air would be filled with song. Migrating warblers, vireos and thrushes would be practicing their vocal territorial claims. Of all the songs, the rose-breasted grosbeak stood out with happy exuberance. In this original print, I have shown the male grosbeak later in the year, when the forest is dark and green. In spite of his spectacular plumage, he is seldom seen in the rich, leafy canopy. - R. B. |

Rough-Legged Hawk in the Elm |

|
This painting is an important landmark in my work. It was started as an abstract - a bold, gesture painting which was strong and exciting. Three years after it was started, I finished the painting, after I had started to paint realistically again. I preferred the surface of the real world - elm bark - to the mere surface of the paint. - R. B. |

Royal Family - Mute Swans |

20" x 32.75" |
$595 |
|
Its two American cousins, the trumpeter and whistling swans, are of the wild, remote areas. The mute swan, on the other hand, is associated with soft landscapes of winding rivers and weeping willows or lush parks and grand estates. This is the elegant swan of poetry and songs. - R. B. |

In this picture, I wanted to give the feeling of richness, intimacy and elegance. I have lit the flowers from the back to give them a transparent glow, which echoes the jewel-like quality of the bird. - R. B. |

These birds are among the world's greatest travelers. They breed in the high arctic tundra and migrate as far south as the southern tip of South America. One can see them during migration in large, colorful flocks. - R. B. |

Rufous Hummingbird |
 |
lithograph |
200 signed and numbered |
7" x 4" |

Weightless as a sunbeam and glowing like an ember, the rufous hummingbird darts into view, disappearing as soon as you blink. Especially drawn to red flowers like a tiny bull charging a matador's cape, he rushes from one bloom to another. - R. B. |
