I have shown this ruffed grouse in a half display mood.Full regalia is almost never spread in winter. It is an early snowstorm in late fall.Ruffed grouse are equipped with fringes on the toes, which give a modified snowshoe effect. Even so, this fellow is having a bit of difficulty wading through the freshly fallen fluffy stuff. - R. B. |

The last glow of winter sunlight fades, transforming the lake shore into a ribbon of gold. Silhouetted against the silent snow, a band of hunters emerges. It has been a variable winter. The snow has partially thawed and then frozen again. The light dusting of snow on top has made traveling easier for the wolves. However, the strong crust also makes it easier for the deer. The wolves can hunt better with a crust strong enough to support their ample paws, but too weak to hold the weight of their sharp hooves. During a heavy winter, the deer tend to "yard-up" in a cedar grove with trails for easier access. There is such a yard nearby, but the deer are not there because at the present, they can move around on top of the snow. The wolf pack must get under way if they are to eat tonight. As dusk deepens, they move out of concealment to the lake. The current along the near shore has opened up the water. In it, the last golden glow of the sky is reflected. Perhaps the deer are on the other shore. Perhaps they are not. The life of a wolf is, at best, uncertain. - R. B.

When the great white pines of North America were cut down and land cleared, the stumps were pulled out to the edge of the fields and used as the first fences.A fence like this one on the edge of a typical farm wood lot gives good shelter for wildlife. - R. B. |

India is the only place where nature seems to flourish in spite of dense populations, even in cities.I was told of a sacred grove in a village on Bali, a Hindu island. We arrived just before dusk, when hundreds, if not thousands, of birds were restlessly rearranging their roosting positions. Most of the birds were egrets of three species. As they rose and whirled through the air, they reminded me of spirits - the essence of birds. - R. One of the very special things about elephants is their sense of family. Elephant society is matriarchal and is generally ruled by one of the older and wiser cows.In this painting, I wanted to show an unremarkable mother elephant facing a potential threat and her trusting calf at her side. - R. In this painting a group of cow elephants and young have just entered the river. Their dusty, dry hides will soon be criss-crossed with dark splashes. The little ones are timid and stay very close to their mothers. The sandgrouse are dove-like ground birds of the arid bush country. They sometimes gather in flocks of hundreds to land at the water's edge for a drink. - R. The running linear pattern of the trees and the perfect reflection caught my eye.As in many of my paintings, shapes and forms found in nature are reminiscent of non-objective painting. - R. B. |

If you were trekking through thick African bush, you would be most vulnerable to attack by lions. They might stay hidden, which is very easy for them to do. You could get too close for comfort, in which case you would find yourself being stared at by at least one pair of eyes. - R. B. |

At the end of the 20th century, there is still room on the planet for those animals that have historically been competitors of man, such as the bears and wolves of North America.Do our competitors live free? Can they still be bears in their own habitats and not just in zoos? - R. B. |

This is a simple painting... a sort of study. It began as a pencil drawing, which I decided to cover with an acrylic wash.I allowed the pencil to show though to carry the contours shown by the pencil shadings.I like the effect of the pencil texture. - R. B. |

European Robin and Hydrangeas |

The European robin is a diminutive bird with a build more like our chickadee. It has a very sweet, high-pitched song which is exceedingly loud for its small size.Since gardens are a favorite habitat, I decided to place this little fellow on a hydrangea blossom, giving him a sense of delicacy perched on the flowers. - R. When I was very small I used to find the call of the loon almost too haunting - like some wild ghost. When I was older and knew how to handle a canoe, I would often go paddling on still moonlit nights with a little bit of mist rising from the water. If a loon called then it was the most magical moment of all. - R. Evening Grosbeak |

|
I placed this evening grosbeak threesome in a white birch tree, which, in the early winter, still has a few of its seed tassels. It is one of those cool, moist days before the first snowfall, but warmth is brought to us by these boisterous birds with their sunset colors and their ringing, melodious chirps. - R. B. |

It was the quality of color, tone and design that most involved me in this picture. There is a restricted color harmony of peach, pink, gold and purple, all of which are almost the same tone, so that a kind of satiny shimmering is presented to the eye. - R. B. |

Dawn and dusk are times of magic. There is a movement and mystery in the world of nature. The shy animals come out of hiding to feed or drink, and predators are on the prowl. - R. B. |

If the falcon is the classical bird of prey, the gyrfalcon is the king of the falcons.Although it is not necessarily faster or braver than the peregrine, it is certainly bigger and can tackle larger prey. - R. B. |

As night approached, a gentle fall of snow drifts down in the aspen grove. It slowly coats the back of the big bull elk as he watches part of his herd move down the slope to a sheltered resting place. With the frenzy of the autumn rutting competition over, he can relax control of his harem. - R. B. |

It is late afternoon, and the sun is glowing through the tops of the Douglas firs. It is time for the mother cougar and her kits to venture out for the evening hunt. This particular scene shows an ecosystem with which I am very familiar. In fact, it surrounds our home. On the southwestern mountain slopes, which pick up the afternoon sun, one finds the Garry oak savannah and open parkland with grasses and wildflowers under the trees. In the valleys and northeastern slopes grow the Douglas fir, cedar and hemlock spruce. This blend is just right for the cougar family, providing shelter and cover for rest, plus open areas affording good vantage points. It is also a perfect place for cougar kits to play. - R. B. |

Eyes in the Grass |
 |
paper |
950
signed & numbered |
10" x 19.75" |
$125 |
|
It is the lions that you cannot see that the prey should fear.A lion can hide in grass scarcely higher than a foot.Their attack technique is a charge from an ambush. The moment before the charge, they are crouched very low, both hind feet on the ground and both eyes on the subject of the attack. It is this moment that I have tried to capture in this painting.By the time you realize that this is more than just a field of grass, you might be thinking your last thought. - R. B. |
