Call of the Wild - Bald Eagle

bateman - call of the wild-bald eagle paper 950
signed & numbered
20" x 26.5" $200

I have shown this bald eagle in a dynamic calling pose and have used the angular thrust of the dead tree to add to the force of the bird. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Canada Geese Family

bateman - canada geese family paper 260
signed & numbered
12.5" x 18.5" email price request

This is my first published original stone lithograph.  I very much enjoyed drawing directly on the stone.  Its "tooth," or texture, gives a solid, warm feeling, which brings to mind the ancient seas in which the rare Bavarian limestone was formed. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Canada Geese - Nesting

bateman - canada geese nesting paper 950
signed & numbered
24" x 31" $1075

Canada geese, for me, are symbols of fidelity and territoriality.  I see them as forceful, direct birds.  In this painting I was thinking about the bond between the two and have shown the male on guard, watchful and alert, and the female on the nest. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Canada Geese Over the Escarpment

bateman - canada geese over the escarpment paper 950
signed & numbered
8.25" x 11.5 $225

This was the view from my studio when I lived in Ontario.  It was different every day, even every hour, as the light changed and as the season changed.  Here I have shown part of a small flight of Canada geese heading south just at sunset.  In a sense, they fit with the rhythm of the seasons. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Canada Geese with Young

bateman - canada geese with young paper 950
signed & numbered
11" x 18.5" $650

Geese and swans are famous in the animal kingdom for their faithfulness as partners; they usually mate for life.  With Canada geese, both parents are involved in rearing the young.  The parents stay together season after season. It has been said that if one of the pair dies, the other will not mate again. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Canada Goose

canada goose lithograph 350
signed & numbered
3" x 7" $450

Robert Bateman appreciates the direct, hands-on involvement afforded the artist in the process of making an original lithographic print. He says, "In modern times - in a world steeped in technology - I admire tradition and the old methods. There is great pleasure in making something by hand and in using skills that are hundreds of years old.

The Cape May warbler is one of many species of migrants which winters in the tropics and breeds in the northern forests. Since his youth Robert Bateman. has thrilled to the bountiful display of song and color during the spring migration.

Cardinal and Sumac

bateman - cardinal and sumac paper 2510
signed & numbered
13" x 19.5" $235

One of the ideas behind Cardinal and Sumac was inspired by a Smithsonian Museum display of an authentic East Indian village, complete with villagers going about their daily business.  I was strolling through when, all of a sudden, a villager wearing a flaming red turban walked past a rich, terra cotta-colored wall.  I was struck by the red-on-red vision - it just sizzled.  I knew then, I would someday paint a cardinal in sumac.   Most North Americans have the opportunity to see cardinals in their own backyards.  The cardinal, however exotic in color, is one of our most familiar favorites.  I like the idea of the cardinal as a representative for Earth Day; it is appropriate that a backyard favorite represent our need to incorporate environmental action into our own backyards. - R. B.

Cardinal and Wild Apples

bateman - cardinal and wild apples paper 12,183
signed & numbered
11.75" x 17.5" $315

These apples were growing on my favorite apple tree in Ontario.  This is a unique tree producing fruit unlike any I have tasted - sweet, aromatic, crisp, juicy and almost lacking in sourness.  It will remain forever wild with its unsprayed and blemished fruit. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Catching the Light - Barn Owl

bateman - catching the light-barn owl paper 2000
signed & numbered
13.75" x 32.5" $220

The most intriguing artistic challenge in this painting was to capture the quality of the slash of light striking across the feathers of the owl, breaking up the obvious shape of the bird into a new and fleeting pattern. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Catching the Scent - Wolf

bateman - catching the scent - wolf paper 950
signed & numbered
9.5" x 12" $155

Like man's best friend, the wolf gets most of his information through his nose. On a cold winter day, the air is carrying a constant flow of data.  Whether these molecular messages relate to a partner, a prey or an enemy, we do not know.  But the wolf knows. - R. B.

Cattails, Fireweed and Yellowthroat

bateman - cattails, fireweed and yellowthroat paper 950
signed & numbered
15.25" x 11.25" $355

Marshes and swamps are a wonderful place for life - not just human life - particularly if you are a naturalist.  Spring is my favorite time in these wetlands with the chorus of frogs, toads, dragonflies and other insects and especially breeding birds from ducks to rails, bitterns and songbirds. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Centennial Farm

bateman - centennial farm paper 950
signed & numbered
19.50" x 26" email price request

I enjoy painting man-made subjects from earlier eras because they have character and individuality.  It is evident that they have been worked on by the human hand and by the forces of nature.  This can no longer be said of our machine-made, packaged world, which is increasingly enveloping us. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Ceremonial Pose - Red-Crowned Crane

ceremonial pose - red-crowned crane lithograph 290
signed & numbered
15.75" x 34" $3300

Here a red-crowned crane is in ceremonial pose, a ritualistic preening gesture in his stylized courtship display. The elaborate courtship dance is designed to engender devotion. - R. B.

The Challenge - Bull Moose

bateman - the challenge-bull moose paper 10,671
signed & numbered
23" x 34.25" email price request

A moose is an intimidating animal.  A big bull is huge - weighing up to half a ton and standing up to seven-and-a-half feet tall at the shoulder - but is amazingly swift and graceful when moving through thick forest and underbrush. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Chapel Door

bateman - chapel doors paper 950
signed & numbered
25" x 18.5" $675

Our human heritage is just as threatened as our natural heritage.  This is sad, because we are losing the reminders of our roots and a time when craftsmanship and care were more important than today.  Although I usually choose nature as the subjects of my paintings, I also want to record the remnants of our history. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Chaps - Western Bluebird

chaps - western bluebird paper 950
signed & numbered
14" x 19.5" $180

The wrangler guide rides into the clearing at the end of another day with a pack horse train. He removes his well worn chaps and other gear and hangs them on this moose antler. His cabin is in a remote valley, rarely visited. Perhaps this is why the Western bluebird feels comfortable enough to hide its nest somewhere within the vicinity. - R. B.

Charging Rhino

bateman - charging rhino paper 950
signed & numbered
20" x 32.5" $765

The black rhinoceros is a prehistoric-looking beast.  In fact, although it is highly evolved, it does have a very ancient history.  He and his ancestors roamed the plains of this planet long before man appeared.  In the last ten years, poachers have caused the rhino population to decline by 90%. I have shown him here in his bold and rugged defiance. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Cheetah Profile

bateman - cheetah profile paper 950
signed & numbered
20" x 30.5" $1200

The cheetah is an animal of the wide-open plains.  That is where his prey, the antelope, lives, and that is where he can see vast distances.  Although he has no serious enemies, he likes to watch the herds for vulnerable animals and to generally keep in touch with his surroundings. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Cheetah Siesta

bateman - cheetah siesta paper signed & numbered x email price request

In the big-game country of Africa I am always aware of the huge, overpowering, blue sky, especially at places like the Amboseli plain in southern Kenya, shown here in Cheetah Siesta.  I wanted to feel the presence of the sky in this picture, but I had to be persuaded by my wife, Birgit, that I could put the horizon as low as it is and still have room for the cheetah and the plain.  I also had to resist the temptation to let more tall grasses stretch across the horizon, or to introduce a cruising vulture in the distant sky.  By leaving it empty, the sky becomes as strong a force in the picture as the cheetah itself. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Cheetah with Cubs

bateman-cheetah with cubs paper 950

Cheetahs are animals of the open plain.  Their eyes are a match for their legs in devouring the miles. - R. B.

Go face to face with Bateman's American Bison. This large as life symbol of the freedom of the American West will enrich your surroundings with it's power and drama. R. B., describes the piece by saying, "The native nations of the great plains worked and lived with nature.  The bison were their source of food, clothing and shelter.  It seemed almost beyond belief that such vast herds could be exterminated in so short a time.  I called this painting "Chief" for many reasons.  This is obviously a dominant male rushing along, turning as he goes to confront a potential enemy.  Many of the wise old aboriginal chiefs whose lives were linked to the bison were also fierce and powerful."

ROBERT BATEMAN
Chimney Swift on Nest

bateman - chimney swift on nest paper 950
signed & numbered
11.5" x 8.75" $75

The chimney swift uses its saliva as glue to stick twigs together while building his nest.  In ancient times, they built nests inside hollow trees, and today more commonly they use abandoned chimneys for that purpose.  Recently I discovered a chimney swift's nest on the old wallpaper of an upper hall in an abandoned farmhouse.  In this case, the old house has provided shelter to a new family. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Chinstrap Penguin

bateman - chinstrap penguin paper 810
signed & numbered
12" x 9" $130

There are many species of penguin in the Southern Hemisphere.  They all have special characteristics, but they have in common the tuxedo-like black on the back and white on the belly.  This painting is simply a portrait of one of these little fellows standing beside the typical lichen-encrusted rock of the Antarctic Peninsula. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Clan of the Raven

bateman - clan of the raven paper 950
signed & numbered
11.75" x 23.5" $345

I have long had a passionate appreciation for the artistic achievements of indigenous people, and none more so than the magnificent totem poles carved by the native inhabitants of the northwest Pacific coast. These exquisite abstract sculptures in wood represent for me the pinnacle of indigenous art. They are as beautiful and powerful as anything created by Picasso or Matisse.  Unfortunately, the few old poles that remain in their natural settings are decaying and returning to the forest. - R. B.

I do not mean this to be a frightening picture.  The wolves, which normally avoid eye contact, are staring right at you.  Although they sense your presence, they can't quite make you out.  They are alert and interested, but not about to attack.  They are equal to you, the viewer; they are on the same level.  The feeling of slight tension and respect between you and them is mutual.  You are in their domain.  Now that they know about you they will melt away into the gloom. - R. The spotted owl is one of the rarest birds in North America.  They should be on the endangered species list.  Since they require large acreage of old growth lowland forest, their existence is inevitably threatened by clear-cut lumbering activities.  To me, the spotted owl represents almost a mystical spirit of the great western forest, as it was when white man first arrived.  It would be a pity if the last of the owls were to vanish in this generation. - R. B.

Cougar and Kit

cougar and kit - litho lithograph 290

ROBERT BATEMAN
Cougar in the Snow

bateman - cougar in the snow paper 11,857
signed & numbered
19.25" x 30.25" $180

The cougar is, of course, one of the few great hunters left among the ranks of North American wildlife.  The cougar is now extinct in most of his original range, but in some areas, particularly in the West, it is doing quite well. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Cougar Portrait

bateman - cougar portrait paper 950
signed & numbered
7.5" x 11.5" $175

The cougar is one of the most magnificent animals in North America, and it is one of the great cats of the world.  Although its range was formerly most of the continent in many habitats, competition with man has pushed it back to a few of the more remote forest areas. - R. B.

Country Lane - Pheasant

bateman - Country lane - pheasant paper 950

There is magic in an early spring evening.  The new grass of the year is emerald bright, but the leaves have yet to come into leaf.  The twigs are taking on subtle warmth of color, and here and there first blossoms have appeared. This is ideal country for the ring-necked pheasant. - R. B.

Courtship Display - Wild Turkey

bateman - courtship display-wild turkey paper 950

The American wild turkey, to me, symbolizes the wild American which greeted the pilgrims when they arrived.  The birds, like the land and the Indians, were strong, bold and flamboyant, yet vulnerable. - R. B.

ROBERT BATEMAN
Coyote Head Study

Coyote Head Study by Robert Bateman paper 2500
signed & numbered
7" x 10.75" $75
The much maligned coyote is the definitive survivor. Found in a variety of habitats, its diet consists of rabbits. rodents, carrion and occasionally, larger mammals, especially deer. Coyotes are one of the fastest terrestrial animals in North America, capable of reaching speeds of 38 miles per hour. The coyote will sometimes form a mutually beneficial partnership with a badger, in which the two will actually hunt together. The coyote uses its keen sense of smell to locate burrowing rodents so that the badger can dig them up with its powerful claws. Both then share the prize. It is no wonder that an animal so resourceful as the coyote not only has managed to survive, but that it has extended its territory. This is due in part to human intervention which included the clearing of forests and almost total elimination of the coyote's competition, the wolf. - R. B.
