In this painting, I decided to feature a small flock of geese; the giant masses common on such wintering grounds would be too confusing.  I wanted to depict the way the endless flocks and the mist created an almost architectural sense of space in the air. - Robert Bateman

Two lionesses in the late afternoon sun glow like amber in the grass.  They are alert and ready.  Their muscles are perfectly in tone and ripple slightly as does the gentle wind on the clumps of grass.  They face the wind for the scent of prey. - Robert Bateman

I have portrayed this owl at the end of the day in the rich glow proceeding sunset.  White light is made up of all of the colors of the spectrum.  On a winter evening, these colors seem to separate and radiate a shimmer of every hue.  I have echoed the bounds and curves of the grasses in the form of the bird and the wind-sculpted snow. - Robert Bateman

The big, wild mammals of Denali Park make this destination worth an autumn visit, but the glory of fall colors creates landscape vistas that dazzle the eye even without the view of wildlife.  When I saw this grizzly mother and cub coming down a distant slope, I kept my fingers crossed that they would come closer and head up a particularly gorgeous slope.  To my amazement, they did.  Of course, they did not walk through the very best part, but as an artist, I can move them and plant patterns to suit my artistic urges.  And that is what I did. - Robert Bateman

American Goldfinch - Winter Dress

Both the goldfinches and the pine tree are in unexpected form. Although this is a little picture, in a way, it touches something very important in my work.  The great thing about nature is its variety.  It changes not only from place to place, but with every passing moment.  This is why I try to avoid the stereotype in nature and why I wanted to do the winter goldfinch in an orange pine. - Robert Bateman

The baby cottontail has left his nest.  He was born about a month ago, blind, pink and thumb-size.  His mother had made a nest of rootlets, grasses and down from her own chest.  By using four to seven materials, when the mother leaves the nest, the baby is perfectly protected and camouflaged. - Robert Bateman

Man, however, does not appreciate competition in his domain, thus the wolf has been eliminated from all areas where man lives. Only the most remote and inaccessible places still have viable wolf populations. - Robert Bateman

Falcons have an expression about the eyes which is dignified and strong, yet with a certain warmth. It reminds me of the expression of a racehorse. To me, the interlocking shapes of the bill, mouth and bare skin in front of the eye are reminiscent of the elegant sculptures of ancient Egypt or northwestern American Indian totem poles. - Robert Bateman

The arctic summer is a time of brightness and life.  I have been lucky enough to be there several times in breeding season. Birds are abundant and are busy courting and defending their territories.  One of the fiercest defenders is the arctic tern.  I have been the unintentional offender many times and have been the victim of repeated diving attacks, some of which hit their target - my head. - Robert Bateman

My dog, Smallwood, lived to a ripe, old age.  His enthusiasm and interest in the landscape was always inspiring.  I found myself noticing things that he noticed.  In this painting, I have elaborated on a complex jumble of meadow plants, which would be at the level of Smallwood's world. - Robert Bateman

Bird feeders are a recent phenomenon in nature.  With the advent of naturalist field guides, due to the great work of Roger Troy Peterson, the population of bird watchers and bird lovers has steadily increased.  Bird feeders have made a difference, particularly to seed-eating birds, during the stressful time of winter and may have been a factor in extending the range of the cardinal in the north. The cardinal is a non-migrant and needs all of the help it can get in winter. - Robert Bateman

Buteo hawks, such as red-tails, normally hunt by soaring in open country, watching for their prey, but they often like to sit in a place where they can clearly see in all directions. Forest trees are actually not as good as the installations of man for this purpose. - Robert Bateman
