"Seeing the canoe was, for me, a kind of spiritual experience. Although there was no raven present on that day, in my mind's eye, I saw one. To the Haida, the raven is a wily trickster-transformer who created the world, and I could see him, hovering over the canoe, perfectly centered." - R.B. |

Above the River - Trumpeter Swans |
 |
paper |
950 signed & numbered |
15.5" x 27" |
$1615 |
|
I chose the trumpeter swans as the counterpoint to the river because I enjoy the tension between their dusky pale blue and the bright creamy river. In addition, I was expressing my delight in the recovery of a population of this bird, which was once endangered. - Robert Bateman |

Across the Sky - Snow Geese |
 |
paper |
950 signed & numbered |
19.5" x 26" |
$435 |
|
In this painting, I decided to feature a small flock of geese; the giant masses common on such wintering grounds would be too confusing. I wanted to depict the way the endless flocks and the mist created an almost architectural sense of space in the air. - Robert Bateman |

African Amber - Lioness Pair |

Two lionesses in the late afternoon sun glow like amber in the grass. They are alert and ready. Their muscles are perfectly in tone and ripple slightly as does the gentle wind on the clumps of grass. They face the wind for the scent of prey. - Robert Bateman |

In this painting, I have tried to suggest the feeling of the powerful contortions of the African fish eagle's call through the visual rhythms of the gnarled trees. - Robert Bateman |

Afternoon Glow - Snowy Owl |
 |
paper |
950 signed & numbered |
17" x 23" |
$775 |
|
I have portrayed this owl at the end of the day in the rich glow proceeding sunset. White light is made up of all of the colors of the spectrum. On a winter evening, these colors seem to separate and radiate a shimmer of every hue. I have echoed the bounds and curves of the grasses in the form of the bird and the wind-sculpted snow. - Robert Bateman |

The Air, the Forest and the Watch was painted as a celebration of Earth Day. My subjects, the atmosphere, the trees and the bald eagle, were chosen as symbols of issues that require our commitment to the preservation of our planet. - Robert Bateman |

The big, wild mammals of Denali Park make this destination worth an autumn visit, but the glory of fall colors creates landscape vistas that dazzle the eye even without the view of wildlife. When I saw this grizzly mother and cub coming down a distant slope, I kept my fingers crossed that they would come closer and head up a particularly gorgeous slope. To my amazement, they did. Of course, they did not walk through the very best part, but as an artist, I can move them and plant patterns to suit my artistic urges. And that is what I did. - Robert Bateman |

This is my first Alaskan painting. It is part of my artistic philosophy to orchestrate a painting so that the main elements do not compete. I either want the animal or the landscape to dominate - not both. - Robert Bateman |

American Goldfinch - Winter Dress |

Both the goldfinches and the pine tree are in unexpected form. Although this is a little picture, in a way, it touches something very important in my work. The great thing about nature is its variety. It changes not only from place to place, but with every passing moment. This is why I try to avoid the stereotype in nature and why I wanted to do the winter goldfinch in an orange pine. - Robert Bateman |

The baby cottontail has left his nest. He was born about a month ago, blind, pink and thumb-size. His mother had made a nest of rootlets, grasses and down from her own chest. By using four to seven materials, when the mother leaves the nest, the baby is perfectly protected and camouflaged. - Robert Bateman |

The wolves in this work have been arranged to induce the excitement of discovery. You and the wolf on the top of the cliff first discover and observe each other. A moment later, you realize that there are other wolves, making their way down to the bottom of the cliff - to your level - and that they too are aware of you. - Robert Bateman |

The whole of North America used to be the domain of the wolf. He was the prime predator next to primitive man. Man, however, does not appreciate competition in his domain, thus the wolf has been eliminated from all areas where man lives. Only the most remote and inaccessible places still have viable wolf populations. - Robert Bateman |

At the edge of the sea, this arctic family pauses before venturing into the real world of the polar bear. This is the world of sea and pack ice. Polar bears are completely at home in the sea with their waterproof fur and broad, flat feet furred almost to the toes. - Robert Bateman |

In the glorious light of Davis Strait, between Greenland and Canada's Baffin Island, the colors shift and bounce. This polar bear, successful in the hunt, has pulled his kill onto the ice floe. The raucous gulls hover in anticipation of scraps. In spite of the bear's great size, he seems only a tiny part of the awesome arctic landscape. - Robert Bateman |

Arctic Landscape |

There is a sense of vastness in the land and sky of the arctic. The clean and barren rock stretches north to the shores of Hudson Bay. In the background of this painting, a polar bear prowls the territory. In fact, he has been moving through this landscape, head down, sniffing for lemmings or perhaps for bird's nests - a summer delicacy. He has become aware of your presence and has raised his head to investigate. - Robert Bateman

Enjoy the delicate beauty of billowy cotton grass, reflected in the sparkling blue waters of the arctic - home to this ancient species. "Much of the Arctic is wet and boggy - a perfect habitat for arctic loons and for cotton grass. To me, the tufts of arctic 'cotton' give a lyrical counterpoint to the striking markings of the loon." - Robert Bateman |

Falcons have an expression about the eyes which is dignified and strong, yet with a certain warmth. It reminds me of the expression of a racehorse. To me, the interlocking shapes of the bill, mouth and bare skin in front of the eye are reminiscent of the elegant sculptures of ancient Egypt or northwestern American Indian totem poles. - Robert Bateman |

The arctic summer is a time of brightness and life. I have been lucky enough to be there several times in breeding season. Birds are abundant and are busy courting and defending their territories. One of the fiercest defenders is the arctic tern. I have been the unintentional offender many times and have been the victim of repeated diving attacks, some of which hit their target - my head. - Robert Bateman |

My dog, Smallwood, lived to a ripe, old age. His enthusiasm and interest in the landscape was always inspiring. I found myself noticing things that he noticed. In this painting, I have elaborated on a complex jumble of meadow plants, which would be at the level of Smallwood's world. - Robert Bateman |

In recent years, I've gone back several times to my grandfather's farm in eastern Ontario, where my father grew up. When I walk down the lane to the land owned by my grandfather, I am aware of being in a place where the face of the land hasn't changed much in more than a century. It represents a piece of human heritage as valuable to me as any piece of nature. - Robert Bateman |

Safely stationed in an imposing rock crevice, the bobcat keeps watch over its territory. Relying primarily on its senses of sight and hearing to pinpoint potential prey, the bobcat has chosen a sylvan spot on this mossy platform. - Robert Bateman |

|
Bird feeders are a recent phenomenon in nature. With the advent of naturalist field guides, due to the great work of Roger Troy Peterson, the population of bird watchers and bird lovers has steadily increased. Bird feeders have made a difference, particularly to seed-eating birds, during the stressful time of winter and may have been a factor in extending the range of the cardinal in the north. The cardinal is a non-migrant and needs all of the help it can get in winter. - Robert Bateman |

Buteo hawks, such as red-tails, normally hunt by soaring in open country, watching for their prey, but they often like to sit in a place where they can clearly see in all directions. Forest trees are actually not as good as the installations of man for this purpose. - Robert Bateman |

As the days shorten with the coming of winter, the leaves have mostly fallen, but the grasses still glow gold and green. While much life is slowing down, the moose is becoming his most vigorous. Perhaps this bull has heard the mating call of a cow. - Robert Bateman |

Fortunately, there are still vast tracts of our planet where nature reigns. In this landscape, I was awed by the sense of endless lakes, rivers and mountains and, beyond them, more lonely lakes, rivers and mountains. - Robert Bateman |
