"Since no other subject offers so many different textures and color combinations as nature does, and since nature has always been a lifelong passion, it was inevitable that wildlife painting would become my final destination." - CB.
Carl Brenders, a native of Belgium, has drawn since childhood. As an adult, he has enjoyed worldwide accolades for his informed and detailed images of the natural world. He is known for a photorealistic style in which details emerge that make the viewer part of each and every scene he portrays.
Carl creates his mixed media paintings with a combination of watercolor and gouache using a technique he developed over the past several decades. He chooses his subjects from thousands of photographs he has taken in the wild and then makes numerous pencil sketches to prepare for his finished piece. He paints every detail of his wildlife images - feathers, hair, leaves or pine thorns - until, he said, "they get into my skin."
His insistence on anatomical perfection in his paintings stems from his philosophy that nature, itself, is perfection: "That is why I paint the way I do with so much detail and so much realism " I want to capture that perfection."
In 1984, Carl began a relationship with Mill Pond Press that brought his limited edition prints into American prominence. In 1989, Carl's first one-man exhibition at Gallery One launched a strong collector base for the Ohio gallery.
In 2011, Gallery One and Carl celebrated ten appearances in Mentor OH with the exclusive release of two giclees on canvas: Just Shy of Sly and Island Shores - Snowy Egret. The two giclees are published by Gallery Giclees, a company owned by Gallery One founders, Norah Lynne Brown and Alan Brown.
Carl's art has been the subject of the book, Wildlife: The Nature Painting of Carl Brenders and it has been featured in More Wildlife Painting: Techniques of Modern Masters and The Best of Wildlife Art. He has produced wildlife illustrations for more than 20 books in a series entitled The Secret Life of Animals.
Annually, Carl has been included in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's prestigious Birds in Art show.
A major retrospective exhibition of 30 of his works, entitled "Artistry in Nature: The Wildlife Paintings of Carl Brenders," opened at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, PA, before traveling to Cleveland, OH, Louisville, KY and Shreveport, LA.
